Traditional Thai

Thailand's traditional technique, practised clothed on a mat: pressure along the sen lines combined with assisted stretches. Inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, it is among the most codified bodywork systems in the world.

What judges look for

We do not ask whether you know the form. We ask whether you can fit the form to the person in front of you.

  • Accuracy on the sen — staying on the line, returning to the same point every time
  • Weight transfer — pressure from your centre of gravity, not from your arms
  • Breath — stretching as the receiver exhales
  • Safety — adjusting neck and lumbar rotation to the person's range and age
  • Flow — carrying the traditional foot-to-head sequence without breaking it

How judging works, at a glance

  1. Entry

Each person may enter up to two categories

  2. Competition

Consultation, then a 30-minute treatment. Up to 15 at a time; fellow competitors take turns as recipients

  3. Scoring

Judges score the 8 criteria, each out of 10

  4. Totalling

The scores of the judges who gave the highest and the lowest are excluded; the rest are totalled and averaged

  5. Placings

Placings are decided per category. Ties are broken in a set order
