Competition Flow & Venue

The flow of each round and an overview of the venue facilities on the day.

How the competition runs

Up to 15 competitors give a 30-minute treatment at the same time, and the judges score them against the judging criteria.

Pre-Treatment Consultation

Before treatment begins, there is time to check the recipient's condition and what they would like. The approach to the treatment is built around their condition on the day.

Divisions entered

Each person may enter up to two divisions. Competition is held per division, and placings are decided per division.

Venue Facilities

  • Up to 15 treatment beds are set up in the competition area.
  • The beds have headrests and are height-adjustable.
  • Mats are also provided.
  • The venue is the Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Second Gymnasium (2-1-1 Jinnan, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo).

Rules of Participation

Basic rules regarding what to bring, attire, and conduct during the treatment.

  • Bring your own equipment, such as sheets, towels, oil, and treatment tools.

  • The recipient must wear underwear at all times during the treatment and keep the chest covered.
  • Participants may take photos and video, provided it does not disturb other competitors or the judges. Please refrain from filming outside the competition itself, and in changing areas.
  • Insurance is each participant's own responsibility.
  • Participants who do not speak English may bring an interpreter arranged by themselves.
  • All participants serve as both giver and receiver of treatment.
  • Manipulative techniques such as chiropractic and osteopathy are prohibited.
  • The music played during treatment is provided by the organizers. The use of earphones and similar devices is prohibited.

Code of Conduct

Our policy on the dignity competitors must uphold.

Judging & Final

The final is scored by several specialist judges.

Who the judges are
  • Therapists working at the forefront of each category
  • People from industry bodies and training schools

Judges are selected from therapists working at the forefront of each division and from industry bodies and training schools. Scoring follows the eight judging criteria.

On Judging & Records

Our policy on handling results and on publishing competition footage.

How the final score is calculated
  • Judge who gave the highest scoreExcluded
  • Other judgesCounted
  • Judge who gave the lowest scoreExcluded

Total the rest and average = final score

Order of comparison in a tie
  1. Final score
  2. If tied

    Impression evaluation
  3. If tied

    Massage technique (skill)
  4. If tied

    Innovative ideas
  5. If tied

    Posture during treatment
  6. If tied

    Treatment flow

Scoring method

Each item is scored out of 10. For the final score, the scores of the judge who gave the highest and the judge who gave the lowest are excluded, and the remainder are totalled and averaged. This prevents any one judge's evaluation from directly determining the result when the number of judges is small.

In the event of a tie

Where total scores are level, the impression evaluation is compared first. If scores are still tied, massage technique (skill), innovative ideas, posture during treatment and treatment flow are compared in that order.

Recording and Publication

Lectures, preliminaries, the final, and the awards ceremony are recorded and published on television, social media, and elsewhere. By entering the championship, you are deemed to have consented to the use of video and photographs.

Participation Formats

The championship is held on site at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Second Gymnasium. There is no online participation.

On-Site Participation

A format in which you come to the venue and demonstrate your treatment before an audience and the judges. On this high-pressure stage, not only your technique but also your focus and bearing on the day are tested. Meeting peers competing in the same venue is a charm unique to this format.
